Chapter Twelve

C harlotte knew all too well just how competitive those in the Isle of Man crafting scene were. It was something she’d witnessed firsthand during the Square If You Care initiative earlier in the year. Therefore, it should have come as no surprise, then, that each crafting club/coffee morning group she contacted were desperate to sign on the dotted line, the allure, it would appear, of proving their credentials as the finest crafters on their fair isle impossible to resist. Indeed, many of those she’d spoken to that morning weren’t just concerned with the where and when but more with who else had also signed up, owing to some previous, unsettled beef or other. Charlotte discovered, for instance, that several members of the group called Stitch ’n’ Bitch were embroiled in something of a turf war with another craft club called the Knitty Noras. But she didn’t delve too deep into that ongoing skirmish for fear of being somehow implicated.

You couldn’t make this stuff up, Charlotte thought. And with the salty language heard on several of these calls, she could easily be forgiven for thinking she was dealing with rival hairy-arsed biker gangs rather than a collection of local crafting clubs. Unfortunately, there was no provision for security guards in Charlotte’s event budget, but she was starting to think it might be a prerequisite based on the tenor of some of the conversations she was having. Anyway, with these calls now out of the way, she was now engaged in another matter…

“Yes, that’s correct,” Charlotte said into her phone. “Either Saturday the second of December or the following week,” she confirmed, pacing around the Union Mills church hall as she spoke. Charlotte waited for a few seconds for a response, but what she received was not of the sort she’d hoped for. “Excuse me. Are you laughing at me?” she said, placing a firm hand on her hip, even though the person on the other end obviously wouldn’t be able to see her defiant posture. “Yes, I know it’s the run-up to Christmas,” she said, raising her voice. “We chose those particular dates so we can sell our festive goodies,” she explained. “So that’s a no, then, is it?”

Stanley, who’d been earwigging while he placed out chairs for the start of the day’s Crafternoon Sewcial Club session, pulled a pained expression once his mum put down her phone. “No dice?” he asked, being the perceptive young chap that he was.

This managed to raise a smile from Charlotte, despite the unproductive nature of this last call she’d made. “No dice?” she replied, repeating her son’s words back to him. “Where on earth did you—” she began to say. “Wait, have you been watching those dodgy old American gangster films at your dad’s again?”

“I ain’t no snitch, lady. You’ll never take me alive,” Stanley responded, before closing an imaginary zipper over his mouth.

“I’ll be having words with Don Corleone the next time I see him,” Charlotte told him, removing her angry hand from her hip.
